Which Should You Choose?
PG/VG ratios influence throat hit, vapour production, flavour delivery, and how easily your coil stays saturated. The two most common blends, 50/50 and 70/30, behave very differently depending on the device you’re using, and choosing the right one makes a noticeable difference to performance and coil life.
50/50 E-Liquid — Fast Wicking, Pod-Optimised, and More Universal
A 50/50 mix is thinner and moves through cotton quickly. That’s exactly what modern pod systems are built around, including 0.8Ω, 0.6Ω, and 0.4Ω pod coils.
Why 50/50 works so well in pods
Pod coils use small wicking ports, compact cotton, and lower wattage. Even low-ohm pod coils don’t behave like sub-ohm tank coils. They can’t absorb thick liquid fast enough, so a thinner blend keeps the cotton saturated and helps prevent dry hits.
What 50/50 delivers
- Stronger throat hit
- Faster wicking
- Clear, consistent flavour
- Longer coil life in pods
- Discreet vapour
Because most vapers today use pod systems rather than high-power tanks (see our blog about this!), 50/50 is the most universally compatible ratio. It works across almost all pod devices with predictable, reliable performance, which is why it’s the most commonly purchased blend.
70/30 E-Liquid — Thick, Smooth, and Built for Power
A 70/30 VG/PG blend is thicker and smoother, and it needs a device that can move a lot of liquid quickly.
Where 70/30 performs best
High-VG liquid needs wide wicking ports, high wattage, large cotton beds, and open airflow. This is why 70/30 is the standard for sub-ohm tanks and high-power mods.
What 70/30 delivers
- Dense, warm vapour
- Smooth inhale
- Big clouds
- Best performance at higher wattages
Put 70/30 in a pod and the cotton often can’t keep up, especially during chain vaping, which leads to dry hits and burnt coils.
Which Ratio Should You Choose?
Choose 50/50 if you use:
- Pod systems
- 0.8Ω, 0.6Ω, or 0.4Ω pod coils
- Nic salts
- MTL or RDL vaping
Choose 70/30 if you use:
- Sub-ohm tanks
- High-power mods
- DTL vaping
- Coils with large wicking ports
The Bottom Line
Pod coils — even the low-ohm ones — are engineered for thinner liquid. Sub-ohm tanks are engineered for thicker liquid. Matching the ratio to the device gives you better flavour, better coil life, and a smoother overall experience.
And because most vapers use pods, 50/50 remains the most compatible and widely used ratio, offering the best balance of performance, flavour, and reliability across the widest range of devices.
